Music & Rituals : Christmas in Colombia

 The 1950s marked one of the most pivotal moments in human history. It was a time of confusion and constant threat, and most importantly, it was a time when the sparks of progress had begun. It was a time of transition; WWII had ended, and a massive sense of optimism had spread in the United States. Economically, the U.S. was booming, becoming the world's leading democratic power. These characteristics of the time influenced the birth of one of the most important musical genres. 

When it comes to the true origin of Rock and Roll, we have to look at the blues, more specifically R&B, short for Rhythm and Blues. Many musical characteristics are shared between R&B and Rock and Roll; the melodies, rhythms, and vocal techniques are closely shared. Both music styles shared a beat that encouraged people to get up and dance. They served as a racial bridge between the white and black communities in the U.S. They also shared instruments such as drums, piano, bass, and electric guitar. The main fundamental difference between the two is the use of the electric guitar; in Rock and Roll, the guitar is often distorted and more pronounced than the other instruments. "Rocket 88" by Jackie Brenston is considered the first Rock and Roll song as it contains the distinct sound of a distorted electric guitar.  

Rock and roll is synonymous with rebellion, static energy, and a youthful spirit. It has left an impactful and profound mark on the music industry and American culture in general. Rock and roll has often been described as combining county music and rhythm and blues. The genre was primarily influenced by black culture and white spending power. The African-American community was vital in developing rock and roll in the United States. Artists like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and James Brown are remembered as greats of the rock and roll industry, and their impact on the genre is acknowledged. 

"Johnny B. Goode" by Chuck Berry is one of the most essential Rock and Roll musical pieces. It contains so much energy and excitement from the very first notes. This song is iconic for the time, and it's a masterclass at showing the most prominent characteristics of Rock and Roll. It has a variety of infectious guitar riffs; it's the most recognizable aspect of the song. The opening guitar riff is one of the most famous in rock music history. The song follows a storytelling type of lyrics; this shows the apparent influence that the blues had over Rock and Roll at this point in time. This song perfectly captures the essence of Rock and Roll. Chuck Berry also significantly influenced many famous artists, such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, and many more.

The African-American community played a significant role in creating the characteristic sound that would become Rock and Roll. Still, many musical producers and labels wanted to put a white artist as the face of Rock; they tried to overshadow black musicians and their influence on the genre. Producers and music labels had failed to find a white artist who would deviate attention from other black artists until they found Elvis Presley. Elvis was known as the king of rock; he became the new face of rock and roll and was also considered a global superstar. His music still had bluesy roots, and African-American artists also influenced him. The song "Hound Dog" was initially released by African-American artist Mama Thornton. Still, record labels released the cover by Elvis, which became extremely popular as it appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1956. Elvis was also characterized by the dance moves he would do on stage. 

As a result of Elvis's popularity, rock became the mainstream music of the late 50s and early 60s. Other artists of the time, like Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, helped spread the rock sound across America and the world. In the early '60s, the idea of rock bands became popular, resulting in the creation and popularization of artists who would change rock music and the whole music industry. One of these bands was The Beach Boys. They became famous for their unique sound, which combined elements of surf music and rock to create a highly recognizable distinct style. The band's success was partly a result of songwriting genius Brian Wilson, who wrote most of their biggest hits. They were among the first artists to use complex arrangements, harmonies, and instrumentation in their music. Their legacy in rock and roll is undeniable, and their influence can still be heard in the music of many artists today.
